Things to look out for in your Whey Protein

Take note of the following key factors :

  • Protein Content: Look for at least 20-25 grams of protein per scoop to ensure a solid dose of protein per serving.
  • Type of Whey Protein:
    • Whey Concentrate is the most affordable and offers a balanced nutrient profile.
    • Whey Isolate is ideal for a purer, low-fat, low-carb option as most of the other minerals have been removed. Great for lactose intolerant people. It costs about 40-50% more than Whey Protein Concentrate.
    • Hydrolyzed Whey is pre-digested for faster absorption, for those who want quick recovery or have sensitive digestive systems. This is the most expensive among the types of whey.
  • Ingredients: Avoid products with unnecessary additives, artificial sweeteners, or fillers. Choose products with simple, clean ingredient lists.
  • Taste and Flavor: Choose a protein powder with a flavor profile you enjoy, as it will make sticking to your routine easier.
  • Mixability: Most whey protein powders dissolve well when mixed with 200ml of water per 30g scoop. If more liquid is required, it often means the product is blended with other protein sources like soy or pea.
  • Transparency and Quality: Opt for brands that are more well known, and have a good track record. There are many brands that have fake ingredients/nutritional listings out there.

TYZO Whey Protein Isolate
TYZO Whey Protein Isolate
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.043
  • Highlights: TYZO Whey Protein Isolate stands out as the cheapest whey protein on this list. I have doubts on what’s in the product, as the raw material price for Whey Protein Isolate far exceeds this price.
  • Update – They have now rebranded to Tyzo Protein, instead of Whey Isolate Tyzo.
Muscle Kingdom Whey Kingdom/King Whey
Muscle Kingdom Whey Kingdom/King Whey
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.07
  • Highlights: Muscle Kingdom offers one of the cheapest whey protein powder options in terms of value, especially with its 5lb packaging. However, there has been a known case of someone from LowYat Forums actually sending this brand of protein for lab test, and only coming back with 22.9g protein per 100g. They may be cheap for what they advertise, but are you really getting what you paid for?
BS Nutrition Hydro Whey Protein
BS Nutrition Hydro Whey Protein
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.073
  • Highlights: This whey protein tastes the best among the many I’ve tested. The prices varies quite a bit for different flavors, notably Green Tea and Hazelnut is the cheapest, but also raises some eyebrows for being way too cheap for Hydrolyzed Whey.
PHARMANUTRI Vital Whey Isolate Halal
PHARMANUTRI Vital Whey Isolate Halal
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.081
  • Highlights: As a halal-certified whey protein isolate, PHARMANUTRI offers too good value for its price. They go as far as to even publish their lab report. However, even with the lab report, this product tastes exactly like Soy Protein Isolate.
Agym Nutrition Titan Whey
Agym Nutrition Titan Whey
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.087
  • Highlights: Agym Nutrition’s Titan Whey is a blend of whey protein and plant proteins like pea and soy. A solid choice if you’re looking for HALAL, and not looking for pure Whey.
JustSHAKE Extreme Gold 100% Whey Isolate Protein
JustSHAKE Extreme Gold 100% Whey Isolate Protein
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.105
  • Highlights: JustSHAKE’s whey protein isolate is a mid-range product in terms of price per gram of protein, but its quality and taste make it a popular choice for regular gym-goers. There’s lots of clearance promotions for close to expiration products.
PHARMANUTRI Whey Protein Concentrate 81%
PHARMANUTRI Whey Protein Concentrate 81%
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.105
  • Highlights: PHARMANUTRI go as far as to even publish their lab report. I’ve personally tried this brand, and do not trust it. The values on their nutritional labels don’t make sense. They have other filler ingredients and yet, claim to have 0g fat and sugar. As far as I know, their nutritional label is only for their raw whey ingredient, but who knows what percent is it in the final product.
Fit First Fit Protein
Fit First Fit Protein
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.112
  • Highlights: Fit First Protein is a blended protein powder of Whey and Soy, the percentages of the blend is unknowned. They also include in L-Carnitine (very small dose) which helps in fat burning.
One Shot Nutrition Whey Protein Performa
One Shot Nutrition Whey Protein Performa
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.113
  • Highlights: Another affordable protein powder option from One Shot Nutrition, the Performa variant provides a good balance of quality and price because it’s blended with Soy Protein Isolate.
MuscleTech Nitro-Tech Whey Gold Protein Powder
MuscleTech Nitro-Tech Whey Gold Protein Powder
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.114
  • Highlights: Known for its quality, MuscleTech’s Nitro-Tech Whey Gold is popular among serious fitness enthusiasts. It’s slightly more expensive but offers a high-quality protein blend and a reputable brand. They too offer huge discounts for closer to expiry products.

one shot nutrition kombat whey Bestvaluebadge
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.129
  • Highlights: One Shot Nutrition’s Whey Protein Kombat offers a reasonable price per gram of protein. It is also one of the upcoming brands in the industry. They have sales really often, latest price I’ve seen is around RM88.
Hazim Khalim Pure Whey Protein Concentrate
Hazim Khalim Pure Whey Protein Concentrate
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.138
  • Highlights: This unflavored whey protein concentrate is a repacked version of NZMP’s Whey Protein Concentrate 80%. This is as simple and pure as it gets, assuming there are not adulteration going on.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey 100% Bestpremiumbadge
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.151
  • Highlights: Often regarded as one of the best whey protein brand, Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard is known for its premium quality. Although it’s not the cheapest, it remains a go-to for many due to its high reputation. Make sure you get it from their official online shop. I’ve written another review for this product here.
Myprotein Impact Whey
Myprotein Impact Whey
  • Price per gram of protein: RM 0.168
  • Highlights: Although on the higher end in terms of price, Myprotein’s Impact Whey is one of the more well known global brands that’s available for sale here in Malaysia.

Be A Smart Shopper

When it comes to selecting the best high-quality whey protein powder, it’s essential to consider both value and authenticity. With so many options here in Malaysia, it may be tempting to go for the absolute cheapest options, it’s worth noting that the market price for raw whey protein concentrate 80% is already around RM100 per kilogram. This means that prices significantly below RM0.10 per gram might indicate compromises in quality or authenticity.

Think of whey protein powder like an investment in your health – similar to how you wouldn’t expect to buy gold well below market price, you shouldn’t settle for a protein supplement that seems “too good to be true.” Opting for products in the RM0.10 per gram range and above offers reassurance that you’re getting a reliable, effective product without unnecessary fillers or low-grade ingredients. Alternatively, you can look for reviews of brands that have a good track record and reputation for their whey products.

When buying whey protein, remember: the goal is not just to find cheap stuffs, but to ensure you’re getting best value for your money. A quality protein supplement should help you achieve your fitness goals effectively, with the peace of mind that you’re fueling your body with a trustworthy product.

FAQ: All You Need to Know About Whey Protein

1. What is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is a high-quality protein derived from milk during the cheese-making process. It’s a complete protein source, meaning it contains all essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and growth. Whey protein is available in various forms, including whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, and whey protein hydrolysate, each with unique properties.

2. What are the Benefits of Whey Protein?

Protein is the most important for us humans, after air and water. Whey protein powder offers a range of benefits for anyone looking to enhance their fitness or daily nutrition:

  • Supports Muscle Growth and Recovery: Whey protein provides essential amino acids that help repair and build muscle, making it ideal for post-workout recovery.
  • Aids in Weight Management: Protein helps keep you full, reducing cravings and unnecessary snacking, which is helpful for weight management.
  • Convenience for Busy Lifestyles: Preparing a balanced meal isn’t always possible, and a whey protein shake is a quick way to fuel up on protein.
  • Ideal for Picky Eaters: For those who have a hard time meeting their protein needs through food alone, like picky eaters or individuals with limited dietary preferences, whey protein can be an easy and tasty supplement. With a variety of flavors available, it’s a simple way to ensure you’re getting enough protein without overhauling your regular meals.
  • Quick Digestion: Whey protein is fast-digesting, making it ideal for post-workout nutrition to support muscle recovery.
3. When is the Best Time to Take Whey Protein?

The best time to take whey protein depends on your goals:

  • Post-Workout: Taking whey protein after a workout helps with muscle recovery, as it’s quickly absorbed and provides essential amino acids to repair muscle fibers.
  • Morning: Starting your day with a protein shake can prevent muscle breakdown after an overnight fast and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
  • Anytime Snack: Whey protein powder can be used as a convenient protein boost throughout the day, especially if you struggle to meet your daily protein needs.
4. What is the Difference Between Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate?
  • Whey Protein Concentrate: This form of whey protein has slightly more fat and carbohydrates, with around 70-80% protein content. It’s a popular choice for those looking for a balanced protein source.
  • Whey Protein Isolate: Isolate undergoes additional processing to remove most of the fat and carbs, resulting in a higher protein content of around 90% or more. It’s ideal for people who want a leaner protein source, especially those who are lactose-sensitive.
5. Is Whey Protein Safe for Everyone?

Yes, whey protein is safe for most people when taken in moderation, though those with lactose intolerance may experience mild digestive issues if using whey protein concentrate. Whey protein isolate or hydrolysate may be better options for those with lactose sensitivity. Always consult a healthcare provider if you have specific health concerns before starting any new supplement.

6. How Much Whey Protein Should I Take?

The recommended whey protein intake varies based on your goals and dietary needs:

  • For Muscle Gain: Aim for 1.2 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which can include whey protein as a supplement to whole foods.
  • For Weight Loss: Adding 1-2 scoops of whey protein powder to your daily diet can help you feel fuller and reduce cravings.
  • For General Health: One scoop per day can help meet your protein needs if you’re unable to get enough from food alone.
7. What are the Downsides of Using Whey Protein Powder?

While whey protein powder has many benefits, it’s important to be aware of potential downsides:

  • Digestive Issues: Some people may experience digestive discomfort, such as bloating, gas, or stomach cramps, especially if they are sensitive to lactose. This is more common with whey protein concentrate due to its lactose content. Opting for whey protein isolate or hydrolysate may alleviate these issues.
  • Over-Reliance on Supplements: Protein powders are convenient, but they shouldn’t completely replace whole food sources of protein. Whole foods provide essential nutrients and fiber that protein powders lack. Using protein powder as a supplement to a balanced diet is ideal.
  • Possible Allergies: Whey is derived from milk, so individuals with dairy allergies should avoid it or consider alternative protein sources like pea or soy protein.
  • High Sugar and Additives: Some protein powders contain added sugars, artificial flavors, and fillers to improve taste or texture. Always check the ingredient list, especially if you’re watching your sugar intake or prefer a more natural product.
8. What Should I Know About Shady Practices in the Protein Powder Industry?

Unfortunately, not all protein powders are created equal, and some manufacturers use questionable practices to cut costs or boost their product’s protein content on the label. Here are some common practices to watch out for:

  • Amino Spiking: Amino spiking, or “protein spiking,” is a practice where companies add cheaper amino acids (like glycine, taurine, or creatine) to their protein powder formulas to artificially inflate the protein content. Since these amino acids are counted in the protein total, the actual high-quality protein content (from whey, for instance) may be lower than advertised. Look for products from reputable brands that disclose the amino acid profile or have certifications to avoid this.
  • Misleading Labels: Some brands may advertise “100% whey protein,” but the actual content could be a blend of different protein sources or contain fillers. Always read labels carefully and check if there’s a blend of proteins if you’re specifically looking for whey protein.
  • Unregulated Ingredients: Protein powders are not strictly regulated by food and drug authorities, which can lead to inconsistencies in quality and safety. Buying from well-known, trusted brands with third-party certifications can help ensure you’re getting a safer and more reliable product.
  • Low-Quality Ingredients: Some companies use low-grade whey protein or add unnecessary fillers to save costs, impacting the effectiveness and digestibility of the product. Opt for brands that use high-quality whey protein isolate or concentrate and avoid those with long ingredient lists of artificial additives.

By being aware of these practices, you can make better choices and select a protein powder that truly meets your nutritional needs. Look for brands with transparent labeling, good reviews, and third-party testing to ensure the quality and authenticity of your protein powder.

  1. Dan

Hello, just curious. Where did you get the price raw whey powder being ~RM100/kg. I’m fairly new to protein supplements and would like to research a little further. Thanks.

    • Hi Dan,
Search up NZMP Whey Protein Concentrate 80. This is the WPC that a lot of Whey Manufacturers claim to use. I suppose that if you’d buy in bulk directly from their authorized reseller, prices can go cheaper than that.
Best safest route for whey is to buy directly from them, and split up it with your friends. It’s MOQ is 20kg I believe.

Thanks for the recommendations, really helpful for me who is a total beginner to protein supplements. Originally i was using the BS Nutrition trial packs and it was way to expensive for what it was offering.
May i know how do you get the discounts for stuff close to expiry? I assume it’s for stuff like the JustSHAKE brand where it has clear labels in its shopee listing for when its expiring only? How about stuff like the oneshot Kombat, is it possible to find clearance discounts for it?
    Thanks again.

    • Hi there,
I would not recommend going for trial packs, most of the established brands don’t have this option, and if they do, it’s done by repackers. Who knows if they were to dilute your product.
Yeah, close to expiry products usually go on sale, but so far, I’ve only seen Rule1 and JustShake brand doing this. Other brands seems to have better inventory management.
For OneShot Kombat, I always see it going out of stock.
If you’re looking for a good value, my suggestion is to mix different types of Protein Powders. Every single one of them has a different profile of micronutrients and BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids – basically means how well your body can absorb it). I’m planning to write an article about this soon, so stay tuned!

Thanks for sharing, your experience. Any thought on Nutrilite protein. It’s expensive compared to most of the protein on market. But they claim to have good quality

    • Nutrilite by Amway is pretty good if you’re looking at soy protein. However the price for it is super expensive. A friend of mine recently bought a 450g can for around RM100.
Because of the price, they only recommend 10g per serving size, which is only slightly more than an egg for the protein content.

Hazim Khalim has the same thing for 6 times cheaper, only RM30~ for 1kg. Even the best Whey Protein Isolate is cheaper than Nutrilite’s Soy. I personally cannot find the price justifiable for just the branding.
